Looking back on our twenty-five years of marriage we can see how our relationship moved from being fun to being functional. Work largely consumed me. Grace was working full-time, and then after having our first child, stayed at home to take care of the home and our family which grew to include five children. We worked on most everything else first, and tried to work on our marriage in the cracks of life—late at night, catching a few minutes to talk here and there.
The lines between home and work, family and church got blurred.

Given his proclivity for provocative proclamations about oral sex , “real” men , and the reasons later retracted for Ted Haggard’s infidelities, you might assume Mark Driscoll’s new book on marriage, cowritten with wife Grace, would stir the pot to boiling levels. Everything from submission to pornography to finances and date nights are discussed here, with a candidness that will, says the publisher, “send shock waves throughout the evangelical world,” vowing it will be among “the most talked-about Christian marriage releases in years.
But despite Driscoll-addicted buzz, Real Marriage is strikingly conventional, emphasizing the same commonsense ideals that other Christian marriage books do: honesty, mutual respect, forgiveness, and becoming friends with one’s spouse. As Mark told CT, “If you have a solid friendship that you’re working on, the rest of the marriage is going to come together.
The sex is going to get better. You’re going to work with your sin. You’re going to deal with tragedy in a way that is more hopeful than if you’re just business partners doing stuff together. There are already plenty of Christian books about sex and marriage on the market. Why should Christians get advice on sexuality and marriage from a pastor writing a book instead of, say, a counselor, friends, or their own pastor? M: As far as books that address sex go, I actually disagree. I think there are only two that go into much depth on sexuality, and one is quite old, and the other is pretty old.

Statistically speaking, you will almost certainly get married to someone at some point in your life, and it is the next biggest decision you will ever make, second only to your decision to follow Jesus.
Your choice about whom to marry will not only affect your life, but also the lives of your children and their children for generations to come. Before we discuss the type of person a Christian should or should not date, it is important to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any sins and idols guiding your desires so that you can repent. In this way, you can then be open to what God has, which is always best.
Is that relationship strong, maturing and growing, and is it your first priority above all other relationships? Do you need to wait to date someone until a time when your relationship with Jesus is stronger? Is your goal to meet someone with whom you can grow in your relationship with Jesus? Are you taking your cues not from Scripture, the Holy Spirit and godly friends, but from magazines, talk shows, the media, pornography and godless acquaintances?
Are you feeding sinful thoughts and desires that need to be repented of fully before you are fit for any serious relationship?

The Driscoll’s are normal people saved by God’s grace. I’ve interviewed hundreds of authors, artists, theologians and other newsmakers, and generally see them as real people with normal lives, busy schedules and their share of faults. With the exception of Bill Gaither whom I’ve simply chosen to put on a pedestal, and John Piper who every time I’m around him seems to be thinking, Lisa could certainly stand to be more serious, sacrificial, prayerful, missions-minded—and quite frankly, more godly , there aren’t many people who intimidate me.
Mark Driscoll was no exception. I was scheduled to interview him the first interview airs on this week’s show and his wife, Grace, on their home turf of Seattle, WA. I hadn’t known tons about Mark prior to preparing for the interview, and what I learned was a laundry list of average tough-kid-turned-megachurch-pastor-type stuff. I had a lot of questions, and approached the interview as I would with a brother who perhaps used to be annoying, but had grown up, matured, taken some hard knocks and now occasionally had some wise things to say.
We pulled up outside a warehouse-y structure that looked more like a cannery than a suite of church meeting spaces. It was raining of course , so we dashed inside and were greeted by Frank, Mark’s assistant of several weeks. He looked to be in his early 20s, single, and wore surprise, surprise a hoodie and jeans. Dave set up the recording equipment as I strolled around Mark’s office, noting the glass bookshelves, portrait prints of greats like Calvin, Luther and Spurgeon, contemporary couches, and assortment of pens, magazines and random bric-a-brac.
I asked Justin if there was a restroom nearby, and he pointed behind me.

Driscoll is typically quite sexist. He paints Esther of the Old Testament as a whore, and there are so many more examples of his sexist attitudes towards women, which I shall not get into here. As I have blogged about numerous times, conservative Christians present a false picture to singles:. Christians first hold marriage and having children up as the norm, and if you do not marry, you are regarded as a freak and a loser by churches, or else, in some churches, the never married and childless are simply ignored; their needs are never addressed.

Two years ago, Mars Hill Church was the third-fastest growing large church in the country. Thousands more connected with the church online, and Driscoll and his wife Grace wrote a guidebook titled Real Marriage that hit 1 on the New York Times best-seller list in January In hindsight, that year was the pinnacle for Mars Hill. Driscoll resigned a few weeks ago after a leave of absence that begin in August.
Those congregations will have the option to become independent self-governing churches, merge with an existing church, or disband. All central staff will be laid off, and Mars Hill Church itself will close up shop by the new year. Attendance at Mars Hill has declined dramatically from 14, in January to its current worshiper base of 6,, church spokesman Justin Dean said by email. Donations have also declined, although Dean declined to provide numbers.
He framed the dissolution as a “stewardship” issue: Setting the individual churches free was the only way to save them. Dean said about 30 people employed in media distribution, facilities, central finance, and human resources will lose their jobs—including him. Progressive Christians have never felt fondly toward Driscoll, objecting both to his theology and to its masculinist expression. Their disfavor ultimately made it impossible for Driscoll to survive. What went wrong—or, from the perspective of Marsh Hill’s numerous noisy critics, what went right?
Unlike the notorious televangelist scandals of the s , however, there was no single disgrace or crime that brought Driscoll down.
